Ethan Phillips was born in Garden City, Long Island, New York as the only boy of six children. Later, he attended Boston University where he graduated with a degree in English Literature as well as a received a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Cornell University.

He began his acting career on stage in both Broadway and non-Broadway shows including "My Favorite Year", "Measure for Measure", "Lips Together", "Teeth Apart", and "Modigliani". During his comprehensive acting career, he also played leading roles for many of the major regional theaters around the country.

He's been on several TV shows and movies - including popular shows such as "Murphy Brown (1988)", "L.A. Law (1986)", "Chicago Hope (1994)", "The Twilight Zone (1985)", "Hart to Hart (1979)", Star Trek: Voyager and others. His television experience also includes roles in a variety of movies like "Benson (1979)", "Critters (1986)", "Burglar (1987)", "Glory (1989)", "Green Card (1990)", "From the Earth to the Moon (1998)", "Star Trek: First Contact (1996)", "Endsville (2000)", "Family Tree (2003)", "Living in Walter's World (2003)", "Bad Santa (2003)", and "Chestnut: Hero of Central Park (2004)".

Besides acting, Phillips is also a playwright and an author. His original play, "Penguin Blues" has been produced more than 150 times throughout USA and Canada. He co-authored the "Star Trek Cookbook" which was published in 1999.
